Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these medications must be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors believe the way of the injections explains the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts caution that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle support.
